To better control rising costs and become greater assets to South Carolina, AnMed and Self Regional Healthcare have formed Upstate Health Partners. The partnership enables the separately governed, not-for-profit health systems to gain efficiencies and build economies of scale where it will ultimately benefit Upstate residents through investment in technology, new services and special expertise. While the health systems remain independent, they’re creating synergies and contributing to a healthier and more affordable South Carolina through their collaboration.
Founded in 1908, AnMed is an independent, not-for-profit health system serving Upstate South Carolina and northeast Georgia. It’s anchored by AnMed Medical Center, a 508-bed acute-care hospital that’s earned the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The system also includes AnMed North Campus and AnMed Rehabilitation Hospital in Anderson, AnMed Cannon in Pickens and more than 60 physician practices with locations spread from Easley to Hartwell, Georgia. More than 30 specialties are represented on staff. Learn more at AnMed.org.
I am excited about our partnership with Self Regional Healthcare to create Upstate Health Partners. It enables us, as a not-for-profit health system, to better control costs, pass on benefits to our patients and become a greater asset to our community. It permits our separately governed health systems to join forces and gain efficiencies where it will ultimately benefit residents throughout the Upstate with investment in technology, new services and special expertise. While our respective not-for-profit systems remain independent, we’re creating synergies and contributing to a healthier and more affordable South Carolina through this collaboration. I’m personally very proud of that.

Self Regional Healthcare is a not-for-profit referral hospital and health care provider that primarily serves the Lakelands region of South Carolina. It provides prevention, wellness, acute care and tertiary-care services that include cancer care, neurosurgery, heart and vascular surgery, NICU, orthopedics, and genetics. It’s provided care for South Carolinians for 75 years. Self Medical Group is the system’s employed physician affiliate network. Learn more at selfregional.org.
I’m very happy about our partnership with AnMed to create Upstate Health Partners, and I’m eager for our state to reap its benefits. As a not-for-profit health system, Self Regional Healthcare works hard to control costs and pass on benefits to our patients. This collaboration helps us do just that. It will help each of our independent health systems make more investments in providing exceptional care. That’s cause for celebration.

Q & A:
- Is this a merger of the hospitals?
No, not at all. The health care systems and hospitals that are members of Upstate Health Partners are independent. UHP is a jointly owned company that facilitates collaboration among participants and members. - Will other hospitals get to join in?
Yes, we believe that the efforts of the collaborative members will be enhanced by other strong, independent hospitals joining. - What will UHP do?
It will focus on taking costs out of health care for the benefit of patients, communities, members, and payers. - What other functions beside cost and expense management will UHP work on?
Cost effectiveness is the primary focus of UHP. Activities that result in improved costs or avoided expenses will be pursued. - How many employees will UHP have?
One, at this time. The director of UHP is Harold Price. He may be reached at hprice@upstatehealthpartners.com. - How will you know UHP is successful?
We will be measuring real savings and avoided costs. - Why did you form a company? Couldn’t you just do this without one?
A jointly owned company facilitates the work of the parties to find synergies, efficiencies, and cost savings.
